America’s Finest City shined brightly as San Diego welcomed over 4,000 hospitality industry event professionals from around the world to attend the industry’s largest conference and tradeshow, The Special Event 2019.
San Diego was selected as the premier destination for hospitality industry leaders to connect and collaborate with event planners, wedding planners, corporate planners, caterers, business owners and more! What better way to kick off the convention then by hosting Opening Night aboard the San Diego’s most unique destination and event venue, the USS Midway Museum.
Our hospitality industry guests experienced a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore San Diego’s historic aircraft carrier with a “Welcome Aboard! History Revisited” inspired event.
Guests begin their historic “USO Inspired” adventure as they are welcomed by Rosie’s still hard at work at the interactive Step and Repeat before boarding the ship. Once in the Hanger guests were transported into a 1940’s officers club complete is music, lights and some of Culinary Concepts’ down home comfort food:

Our guests continued their historic journey as they moved into the 1960’s when the Midway made its first combat deployment to Vietnam and into the South Pacific. The music turns groovy and the guests are treated to tropical delights provided by Culinary Concepts:

Guest trek up to the Flight Deck were they got to enjoy the spectacular flight deck views of our San Diego skyline, San Diego Bay Bridge and active U.S. Navy ships.
It is here that our guests step into an iconic San Diego experience of a Top Gun Boot Camp. Tom Cruise was there too! (Well… his look alike anyway). How do we feed hungry boot camp recruits?

As our guests’ historic journey begins to close, they are treated to an exciting finale of fireworks lighting up the night sky and sparkling off the bay. The mission of the USS Midway Museum is to preserve the history and legacy of those who serve, inspire & educate future generations, and to entertain museum guests. Mission accomplished USS Midway!
Here are a few facts about why the USS Midway is such an important part of San Diego and the United States:
* USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century
* Named after the climatic Battle of Midway of June 1942, but it missed World War II by one week
* Midway was commissioned on September 10, 1945 and built in17 months
* Midway was the first in a three-ship class of large carriers with a powerful air group of 120 planes
* From demonstrating the US power during the Cold War, to combat in Vietnam, evacuating refugees more than once, and action in Japan and the Persian Gulf, the USS Midway was deployed around the world with our heroes aboard
